The independent examination of a church's accounts are a legal requirement of the Charities Act 2006 for churches with income of between £10,000 and £500,000.

An Independent Examiner must report on the following:

* whether proper accounting records are kept; and

* whether accounts are prepared which agree with the  accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act; or

* whether attention should be drawn in order to enable proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Some questions

Does the church know whether the church's accounts need to be independently examined?

Where appropriate, has the church properly accounted for multiple funds?

Is the church able to meet its reporting deadlines to the church and the Charity Commission, where appropriate?

Has the church decided who can act as an independent examiner to the church?

How Simply Churches Can Help

Simply Churches can act as your church's independent examiner. We always seek to add value to the examination process by providing, where appropriate, written advice on where improvements in financial management can be made (for example, accounting systems, cost control, financial controls, income generation, tax efficiencies).
